Barry Greenstein's "Ace on the River"
Barry Greenstein's "Ace on the River" notes

Below are the more salient points from Barry Greenstein's book Ace on the River. The poker photography in the book is great book store skimming.

--If you win the hand, then lose the argument that may follow. If you win and a player criticizes your play, agree with him. Offer condolences to players who caught unlucky cards. If someone praises you, say you've been fortunate. If you have a joke to tell, say it when you're losing to bad players. Why all this? The goal is to make losing players as comfortable as possible so they don't adjust their game.

--Rest your brain before you play.

--As players fold around the ring, the probability of an ace or king hitting the board increases, something to keep in mind if you're playing A-K or you think someone else is.

--No matter what cards you have, if you think your opponent is too weak to call a raise, then make one.

--When to bluff: (1) right before a tourney break (2) immediately after limits have been raised (3) against a short stack facing a higher payout.

--If you continually find yourself in situations where you have to choose whether to bluff or call a possible bluff, you are probably making some bad decisions on earlier streets.

--You bet to define your hand, so you know what to do regarding your opponent's subsequent actions.

--Playing online, people use the bet/raise pre-select button when they have a monster hand.

--If you put your opponent on a medium pair, then more cards become scare cards that you can bluff at.

--Separate your opponents into two categories: which ones you can run over, and which ones will call you down.

--Steal any pot if you sense weakness in your opponents.

--Greenstein considers himself low on chips anytime he has less than 10 times the big blind. In that situation, he will move all-in with any hand he chooses to play, and will no longer speculate with suited connectors. He will also play hands like K-J from middle position that previously could not have withstood a raise. In late position in an unopened pot, he'll raise all-in with any ace if either he or his opponents have less than 10 times the big blind.

--Use your chip lead like a bludgeon.

--When the game has antes, raise slightly more than the pot.

--Will value bet for 2/3 of the pot in tournaments, but for the size of the pot in cash games.

--Play your opponent's hand as well as your own in regards to how much he'll call or what will make him fold.

--Heads up the pre-flop raiser will represent the flop, so if you make your hand check-raise all-in. If the heads up pre-flop raiser checks the flop, proceed with caution.

--Facing a 3X pre-flop raise with A-Q, A-J, 9-9, 8-8, or 7-7, don't call against a player who makes continuation bets because your hand cannot be defined, but if you have less than 8X the raiser's raise, then move all-in with these and better hands .

--With 14+ outs and two cards to come, you're ahead in the hand.
